9 Tips for Finding the Right Contractor

Finding and hiring the right HVAC contractor is not always the easiest process. But hopefully we can help. Below is a list of the top 9 tips for finding the right contractor, provided by EnergyStar.gov. They are…

  1. Study up: The best thing you can do in your search for the right contractor is to do a little research. First find out about license and insurance requirements for your state. This will help weed out the amateur or unqualified contractors. Then find out the model and maintenance history of your current system. The more information you can give your potential contractor, the better they will be able to understand your heating and cooling needs.
  2. Ask for referrals: Referrals are your best tool for finding the right contractor. So ask around. Talk to friends, neighbors, co-workers, and anyone else who will listen to you for contractor referrals.
  3. Call references: Ask your potential contractor for customer referrals. If they refuse to give you names, just walk away. A contractor with nothing to hide should gladly hand over the names of happy customers. Call a few of the referrals and ask about the contractor’s installation or service performance, and if the job was completed on time and within budget.
  4. Find special offers: HVAC systems represent huge investments. So it only makes sense to search around for good deals to help keep the cost down. Check around for available rebates on energy-efficient ENERGY STAR qualified heating and cooling equipment at www.energystar.gov.
  5. Look for ENERGY STAR: When in doubt, look for ENERGY STAR qualified products. They meet strict energy efficiency guidelines set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and offer significant long-term energy savings.
  6. Expect a home evaluation: Your contractor should spend time inspecting your home to help assess your needs. Don’t trust a contractor who starts offering solutions without ever visiting your home. A good contractor will inspect your duct system for air leaks and insulation and measure airflow to make sure it meets manufacturers specifications.
  7. Get written, itemized estimates: The lowest price is not always the best solution for your home. Be sure to consider cost, energy efficiency and warranties when comparing contractor’s proposals (bids).
  8. Get it in ink: Be sure to sign a written proposal before your contractor ever begins working. This will help to protect you from unexpected costs and/or fraud. Make sure your proposal includes costs, model numbers, work schedule and warranty information.
  9. Get the ENERGY STAR Guide — For complete information on keeping your home comfortable year-round, get the ENERGY STAR Guide to Energy Efficient Cooling and Heating

So do your research and make sure you hire the right contractor for the job.
